The Wedding at Cana
Fruit of the Mystery: To Jesus Through Mary
The events of the wedding at Cana are told in John 2:1-12. Jesus, his disciples, and his mother are at a wedding when the hosts run out of wine. Mary notices this and tells her son, who at first glance seems to ignore her concern. “Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come” (John 2:4). Yet, Mary is not deterred. She knows her son will listen to her plea. She goes to the servers and instructs them, “Do whatever he tells you” (John 2:5). Jesus then performs his first miracle of changing water into wine.
“Do whatever he tells you” are Mary’s last recorded words in Scripture and they are a lesson for all of us. Mary always leads us to Jesus. Any time we turn to her in prayer, she will take that prayer to her Son.
On the cross, Jesus gave Mary to the apostle John and by extension to all of us as our mother (John 19:27). She is the mother of the Church and we are to turn to her as we would to the most loving mother imaginable. We can bring any need to her, no matter how small or how large.
The miracle at the wedding at Cana shows that Mary cares about the minutia of life. The lack of wine was not a life-or-death issue, yet she wanted to save the hosts from embarrassment and knew whom she could ask for help. Mary cares about our problems, both big and small. We can always bring our needs to her.
Devotion to Mary will never detract from our devotion to Jesus. Indeed, it will only enhance it. St. Louis de Montfort, author of the spiritual classic True Devotion to Mary, explains:
Our entire perfection consists in being conformed, united and consecrated to Jesus Christ. . . Now, since Mary is of all creatures the one most conformed to Jesus Christ, it follows that among all devotions that which most consecrates and conforms a soul to our Lord is devotion to Mary, his Holy Mother, and that the more a soul is consecrated to her the more will it be consecrated to Jesus Christ.[i]
In meditating on this mystery of The Wedding at Cana, let us remember to turn to Mary in all our needs so that she may take our petitions to Jesus.
