In the Jewish tradition, a first-born male child belonged to God. Forty days after his birth, his parents would present him at the temple. If poor, they would offer a sacrifice of two turtledoves. At the same time, the child’s mother would be ritually purified.
The account of Jesus being presented at the temple is recorded in Luke 2:22-40. In the temple Simeon prophesied to Mary,
“Behold, this child is destined
for the fall and rise of many in Israel,
and to be a sign that will be contradicted
-and you yourself a sword will pierce-
so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” (Luke 2:34-35)
In this moment of happiness, Mary is told of the high cost she will face in raising her son. She will suffer. She may not have known what form it would take, but she knows the road will not be easy. She also knows that her suffering will serve a higher purpose and is all part of God’s plan.
Prayer
Mary, you were told you would suffer as part of the plan to save many. Help us have courage and fortitude when we too are asked to suffer for the sake of the kingdom of God.
Reflection
Read the full Gospel passage of the Presentation in Luke 2:22-40. Spend some time reflecting on what Mary might have felt when she received Simeon’s prophecy.
