The Church of St. Peter in Leuven, Belgium is home to a statue of the Blessed Virgin and the Christ Child known as Our Lady of Louvain. This statue is also called Sedes Sapientiae (Seat of Wisdom). The statue was carved by Nicolaas De Bruyne in 1472 and was based on an earlier statue from the 13th century. Unfortunately, the De Bruyne statue was damaged by bombs in World War II.
This statue is known as the Seat of Wisdom because it depicts the iconography associated with that title of Mary. This type of image was popular in the 13th century. It portrays Mary on a throne with the Christ Child on her lap. The throne usually has some depiction of lions and the Blessed Virgin’s feet rest on a stool.
During exam sessions, students from the University of Leuven often light candles and pray for help in front of the image.

Prayer
Our Lady of Louvain, Seat of Wisdom, help us to have wisdom in our educational pursuits and in the decisions we make in our lives.
Reflection
Is there something that you are struggling to learn or a decision you are trying to make? So often we try to do it all on our own. In those times of need, remember to ask the Holy Spirit, Jesus, and Mary for help. They will guide your path.
