February 4 - Our Lady of Fire - Forii, Italy

Lombardi Brussi of Ripetrosa was a teacher in the 1420s who taught a group of students in his home, inspiring them with a love of Jesus and Mary. The group said their prayers in front of an image of Our Lady printed from a wood block on paper. The image showed the Blessed Virgin holding Jesus and surrounded by saints as well as the sun and moon.

On February 4, 1428, fire broke out in the downstairs classroom. The entire building was destroyed, but the fire did not harm the image. Instead, the paper emerged from the top of the fire, unharmed.

News of the miracle spread, and Monsignor Domenico Capranica, the papal legate, carried the paper in procession to the Cathedral of Santa Croce. Copies were made of the image and many of the local people displayed them in their homes.

Prayer

Our Lady of Fire, the flames were not able to engulf your image. Please protect us from fire in this life and preserve us from eternal fire in the next.

Reflection

Do you have any images of Jesus or Mary in your home? Pious images can raise our thoughts to heaven and remind us to pray as well as  help create a spiritual atmosphere in our homes. If you do not have any, consider hanging one in a prominent place.
