Here is a link to a great article on Natural Family Planning. It is one of the best explanations I have heard as to why Natural Family Planning is acceptable while artificial contraception is not:

If you liked that article, you will also like "Not Just for Catholics" and "Understanding Humanae Vitae." Both of these are in the "And More" section of the home page of the website of NFP International, www.NFPandmore.org . For years I have argued that a basic reason for the evil of marital contraception is that it contradicts what the marriage act ought to be. That is, the marriage act ought to be a renewal of the marriage covenant, for better and for worse, till death do us part. The body language of contraception says, "We take each other for better but definitely and positively NOT for the imagined worse of possible pregnancy." Contraception renders the marriage act dishonest and therefore invalid as a renewal of the marriage covenant.
