January 27 - Our Lady of Life - Provence, France

The town of Mougins is an ancient village in the south of France. In the 11th century, a local nobleman gave the hill which overlooks the village to a group of monks. The monks then built a chapel in honor of Our Lady on the hill. That original chapel was replaced in 1646 by the Chapel of Our Lady of Life.

The name “Our Lady of Life” was given because there were reports that stillborn children brought to the chapel would regain life long enough to be baptized during Mass. After their baptism, they would enter into eternal life. Many of these babies were then buried near the chapel.

The chapel is home to an ancient polychrome wood statue of Mary and the Christ Child.

Prayer

Our Lady of Life, please protect all children in the womb and all mothers in childbirth. Please watch over all children that will be born today. Please comfort those mothers who lose their children through miscarriage or stillbirth.

Reflection

Do you know anyone who is expecting a child or has a new baby? How can you support them in this time of need? If you know anyone who has recently lost a child through miscarriage or stillbirth, how can you comfort them in their grief?
