January 18 - Our Lady of Good Hope (Our Lady of Dijon) - Dijon, France

The church at Dijon dates back to an abbey established by St. Entienne in the fifth century. The image of Our Lady of Dijon has also been known as the Black Virgin and Our Lady of Good Hope. In 1513, Mary delivered the city of Dijon from the hands of the Swiss. Dijon had 6000 defenders battling against 45,000 Swiss and German troops. The invading army arrived on September 8th (the birthday of Mary). They opened fire the next day, but Dijon suffered surprisingly few fatalities. In addition, Dijon was able to inflict heavy losses on the German and Swiss troops.

On Sunday, September 11, the Black Virgin was carried through the streets as the French prayed to be spared. The following day, a peace treaty was signed.

During the French Revolution, the church was used as a forage storage house, but the French faithful rebuilt the shrine once the revolution was over. Many favors and cures can be traced to the shrine.

During World War II, Germans occupied Dijon. Once again, the people turned to Mary in prayer. On September 11, 1944, the Nazi army unexpectedly left.

Prayer

Our Lady of Good Hope, you helped save the people of Dijon twice when they were invaded. Please help us when we fear for our physical, mental, or emotional safety.

Reflection

What is a situation that is causing you stress and anxiety today? Bring it Our Lady of Good Hope in prayer and then try not to worry about it. This is easier said than done, but give it a valiant effort. Whenever you feel yourself beginning to worry, offer another prayer and then focus on something else.
