January 8 - Our Lady of Prompt Succor - New Orleans, LA

French Ursuline sisters traveled to New Orleans, Louisiana in 1727 and established the first school for girls in what is now the United States. In 1803, there was a shortage of sisters to staff the school. Mother St. Andre Madier appealed to her cousin in France, Mother St. Michel Gensoul, for help, but Mother St. Michel’s bishop refused to grant permission for her to go to New Orleans.

Mother St. Andre turned to the Blessed Mother in prayer, promising "O most holy Virgin Mary, if you obtain a prompt and favorable answer to my letter, I promise to have you honored in New Orleans under the title of Our Lady of Prompt Succor."

In December 1810, Mother St. Michel and some other sisters arrived in New Orleans. From that time on, devotion to Our Lady of Prompt Succor grew in the area.

One well-known miracle attributed to Mary under the title of Our Lady of Prompt Succor took place in 1788. On Good Friday, a huge fire raged in New Orleans which destroyed 800 buildings. The Ursuline sisters and many frightened residents gathered in the chapel to pray. Within minutes, the fire subsided and the convent was spared.

The National Shrine of Our Lady of Prompt Succor is located in New Orleans, Louisiana (https://www.shrineofourladyofpromptsuccor.com/)

Prayer

Our Lady of Prompt Succor, come to my aid.

Reflection

Mother St. Andre Madier turned to Our Lady of Prompt Succor when it seemed all hope was lost. Is there an area in your life where it seems your prayers are unanswered and all the doors have been closed? Bring your need to Our Lady of Prompt Succor.
