January 6 - Our Lady of Cana

In John 2:1-11, scripture tells us of the wedding at Cana where Jesus and Mary were guests. Mary (as mothers are prone to doing) notices that their hosts are running out of wine. While she herself is unable to fix the problem, she knows who can. She turns to her son, knowing that Jesus can save the family from embarrassment. Jesus at first seems reluctant to answer her plea, but Mary doesn’t take no for an answer. Instead, she simply tells the servants, “Do whatever he tells you” (John 2:5). Jesus answers her prayer and turns water into the finest wine.

These are Mary’s last recorded words in scripture. They are her instructions for each and every one of us. Mary always leads us to Jesus. She wants us to follow the one who can give us eternal life.

As she shows at Cana, she is also concerned about the cares of our daily lives. We can bring all our needs, no matter how small, to Mary.

As St. Bonaventure states: “For if Mary while yet on earth was so compassionate, how much more so is she now, reigning in heaven! Mary now that she sees the face of God, knows our necessities far better than when she was on earth, and in proportion to the increase of her compassion, her power to aid us has been augmented.” (https://www.roman-catholic-saints.com/our-lady-of-cana.html)

Prayer

Mary, you saw what the wedding couple needed at Cana and interceded for them before they even thought to ask. Thank you for bringing all our needs to your son.

Reflection

Mary instructs us to do whatever Jesus tells us to do. What is Jesus telling you to do today? Ask Mary for help to listen to him.
