I just finished reading the novel Inheritance by Lisa Barker (Review to come soon.)
In it was this very good line: "The opposite of love isn't hate, it is selfishness."
Love always calls us to put the other first. We can't love if we are only thinking about our own needs and wants and what we can get out of the relationship. We need to want what God wants for that person. We need to give all we can give. Of course, we are going to fail sometimes. None of us is perfect, but it certainly gives us something to aim for.
