The shrine of Our Lady of Bessiere is in a rural area in central France. One famous miracle that took place there involves a heretic who made it his mission to stop pilgrims from going to the shrine. One day when he returned home, he found his house engulfed in flames. His neighbors came to help battle the blaze, but it was no help. Suddenly, all gathered there saw Our Lady appear in the flames. She frowned at the heretic.
He fell to his knees, begging for mercy. His house wasn’t saved, but he repented of his heretical ways and went on to lead a penitential life.
Prayer
Our Lady of Bessiere, you provided loving correction and helped the wayward man repent of his sins. Help us when we have sinned to repent and turn back to God.
Reflection
The man begged for his house to be saved. His prayer wasn’t answered, but he received a far greater gift through repenting and opening himself to God’s grace. Has there been a time in your life when God said no to a prayer, but he answered it in a better way?
