January 21 - Our Lady of Consolation

Mary has been known as Our Lady of Consolation since the second century. Augustinian friars did much to promote devotion to Our Lady under this title. By the 1700s, there was a popular custom of asking for a final blessing before death in the name of Our Lady of Consolation.

In 1901, Blessed Giuseppe Allamano, the rector of the Shrine of Turin, established a religious institute to spread Marian piety through this title.

Many churches throughout the world are named in honor of Our Lady of Consolation.

Prayer

Our Lady of Consolation, we beseech you to be with all those who are dying and to be with us at the hour of our death.

Reflection

Who do you know who is need of consolation today? What can you do to help and bring comfort to that person?
